Candidate Bio

Jim Connolly has lived in Connecticut for the last 40 years and in the town of Clinton for the last seven years. Jim is a forensic psychologist who practices in Waterford, Connecticut. He received his pre-doctoral education at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in psychology in 1978 from the University of Michigan, after which he moved to Connecticut and has been in practice here for the last four decades as a clinical and forensic psychologist. In order to get a better appreciation of the legal system as a whole, Jim entered the University of Connecticut Law School, graduated in 1998, and was admitted to the bar the following year. He is frequently asked to make presentations to professional groups of psychologists and attorneys on psychological issues. Jim is a member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Psychological Association (CPA). For the last six years, he has served as the Vice President of the Forensic Division of the CPA. Jim also serves as a member of the Legislative Affairs Committee of CPA. In 2014, he was awarded the President’s Medal from the CPA for distinguished professional service to the community.

Jim has been a grassroots and neighborhood organizer on zoning, community development and other political issues since his move to Connecticut in 1978. He has written political commentary at the national level in publications such as The Progressive and Counterpunch. Jim helped organize communications networks in support of the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign in 2016. Jim and his spouse, Madeleine Leveille (who is also a forensic psychologist), live on Iroquois Drive in Clinton. Jim’s favorite hobbies are gardening, reading history, collecting antique books and travel. He has a special interest in promoting alternative sources of energy. He is also a serious collector of Connecticut historical memorabilia and artifacts and has presented talks on local Connecticut history, especially Middlesex County and New London County.

Jim Connolly on Planning and Zoning issues in Clinton Connecticut

If elected as a regular member of Clinton’s P&Z, I will insist on openness in decision-making, oppose favoritism and cronyism in zoning decisions, and firmly oppose harmful spot zoning such as the recent P&Z cave-in to CVS and the unprofessional practices of the P&Z which allowed that disaster to happen.

I say: Open the doors and let the people of Clinton in on all of the basic decisions in this town! Planning and Zoning decisions in Clinton, Connecticut should no longer be completely controlled by people who have been handpicked by either the local Republican Party or the local Democratic Party. Insider and “old boy” connections are ruining planning processes here in our beautiful town, which would have so much to offer if only decisions were being made for the greater good rather than the profit of a few. My Irish ancestors had a saying for situations in which everyone knows that something in government has gone very wrong, but the powers-that-be are doing everything possible to prevent an open and full discussion of issues. As the saying goes, “Even the dogs in the street know” that something is very wrong with Planning and Zoning decision-making in Clinton and that the CVS decision is but one proof of it! A vote for me for P&Z on the Green Party line will be a step toward opening the doors and airing out the back rooms and their secrets.
